Yihong Exa Huangis a current Producing Fellow at the American Film Institute. Born in China and based in Los Angeles, graduated from Shih Hsin University in Taiwan. She joined VICE Global Youth Culture Media as a director and supervisor in 2019, and joined BIE(China's most recognized subculture media company) in 2021 to lead the original series show. Her work explores a new generation of Chinese youth practicing lifestyles which against traditional paths, with a particular focus on the wild details of those who are nomadic, wandering, and groping. Her works practice comes from years of mobility and intuition in the documentary field, trying to break down the barriers and mingle the boundaries between the real and the fictional, devoting herself to creating a sense of presence and listening, and focuses on the moment of blurriness to clarity.

 

In the process, she continued to be involved in the production of independent short films among different country, telling stories of over 70 group of subjects, such as a young rapper meeting a mountain community off the grid, a party collective sheltering sexual minority, and a Tibetan gang member selling insurance in the daytime…These stories build up to her current theme: the moments of collision between the inner turmoil of the youth and vast uncertainties of the world.

 

Her works have been showcased at over twenty international film festivals, including notable events in Beijing, Shanghai, London, Berlin, and New York. She also organized a creator group called Doers Lab for underground musicians and film makers in Shanghai. Huang has extensive experience in various aspects of independent film projects, from pre-production to on-site execution.

Her non-fiction works have been featured on platforms such as Tencent Video, iQiyi, BIE, Sanlian Life Weekly, and more. She has collaborated with brands including but not limited to BURBERRY, YSL, Marshall, NIKE, SOLOMON, P&G, TENCENT, and others.

Chronology of Works

October 2023, I Hate Love, narrative film, 15 minutes. Director, Producer. 

Once a young urban romance begins, it's like destiny, moving so quickly and uncontrollably. When she open the photo album, the past of this relationship makes her notice a hint of something wrong. She decides to go back to the beginning of everything and find the truth of love. This film is community-based and work with the crew member who has local real-life experience to do all the filming.

May 2024, Road To Loud, documentary series, 12 minutes x 3. Director, Producer.

This documentary series, led by Yihong, is a collaboration between MARSHALL and BIE MUSIC . Spanning three episodes, it delves into untold stories of contemporary music history in London, emerging musical trends from the other side of the world, and the journey of musicians, including Tang Ting, who seek to infuse vast sounds with intimate emotions.

February 2021, Strangers in Paradise, documentary, 17 minutes. Director.

Delving into “Chilldo”, a Chengdu-based underground party collective dedicated to creating safe space for sexual minorities, it is Beijing Queer Film Festival, London Queereast Film Festival, and Berlin Cilens Film Festival’s Official Selection. 

August 2022, Just Another Day, documentary, 30 minutes. Director, Producer

 Following numerous young residents living in different places in Shanghai who were forced to endure multiple challenges during the two-month city-wide COVID-19 lockdown, it won the Best Short Documentary at the Montreal Independent Film Festival, Best Documentary Short at the Big Fridge International Film Festival, Best Editing and Best New Media at the Independent Shorts Awards.

July 2021, Hi There, documentary, 20 minutes. Director

 A documentary captures an idyllic journey of an urbanite, young rapper Key.L Liu Cong, and his interesting encounters with individuals living alternative lifestyles. Created for RED (China’s answer to Instagram) and BIE (a Chinese multimedia and subculture community), it won the Best Commercial Short Film at the HiShorts! International Short Film Festival

December 2021, Burberry Generation, documentary, 5 minutes. Director.

 A Burberry-sponsored documentary focusing on four pioneering Chinese talents partnering Burberry to capture inspiration from the surrounding world.

November 2021, Beyond Brave, documentary series, 16 minutes x 4. Producer.

There is this group of people who work in the medium of graffiti. They want to explore: is it possible to do graffiti without spray paint? If you do graffiti with a sewing machine, with straw, with chemicals, what does the final product look like? This is an original documentary series sponsored by Diesel

January 2023, Scorch Off Towards the Utopia, music video, 4 minutes, Director, Producer.

A live-action + animated video with AI-algorithms-enhanced cinematography depicting a self-discovery journey, during which the protagonist morphs into different animals. This audiovisual experience created for the first single from Hualun’s long-awaited full-length album, Tempus, won the Official Selection Music Video at Tokyo Shorts, San Francisco Arthouse Short Festival, Big Syn International Film Festival and Los Angeles Lift-off Film Festival.

March 2021, Young Wanderers in the Memory of God (article). Writer

An oral history project collecting stories of a group of young people building up a utopia in a fishing village in Xiamen since the 1990s. Published in DEALERS Magazine (a monthly print publication) and on VICE China.

February 2023, Heads Up to New Life, documentary, 5 minutes, Director, Curator.

A documentary about the Dragon Head Raising Day and hair-related customs of four Chinese ethnic minority regions on that special day. Created for P&G 2023 spring marketing campaign, it was officially recommended at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival.

February 2022, Nike FA22 SFV, video ads, 30s x 12 episodes. Director, Producer.

 In charge of content and artistic direction of  Nike’s Fall 2022 marketing campaign short videos. A group of young artists were invited to try on the latest collection, showcase their talents, and share their Nike stories.

July 2023, A Gathering of BIÉ Friends, digital video, 2 minutes. Director, Producer

 A music festival promo video co-produced with BIE. The clip portrays two girls meeting on the summit of a mountain and embarking on a journey to embrace nature.

November 2023, BIE x SHCR Beats Battle, 2 hours. Organizer

 The sampling contest series co-hosted with the Shanghai Community Radio, invited young underground music producers from all over China to make beats with provided samples for an online contest.

November 2020, Land of the Dance Master, documentary series, 20 minutes x 8, Director, Producer.

Dance is perception, state, not title or competition. When a city and street dance combine, those memories and stories, meeting and parting, are the real dance in life. Together with three top dancers, Snake Man, Leona and Meng Ning, we looked for traces of growth in the alleyways and completed a dance piece. Taobao sponsored.
